The September Issue

Toby and I just watched this film. I had seen the previews a long time ago and forgot about it. We went to blockbuster the other night and I saw it and remembered how much I had wanted to see it. I was not disappointed. It is worth watching regardless of your stance on the fashion industry.

Anna Wintour has an austere persona, yet the film portrays a unique and personal angle about this iconic woman. I found it refreshing to hear her daughter speak about how she finds the fashion industry to be slightly absurd. The film also follows Grace, fashion editor I believe was her title, as she produces glamorous and genius shoots. It was almost heart breaking to watch the battle she goes through of creating such amazing photos, only to have them cut from the magazine by Anna.

The work that the editors of Vogue put into this issue is intense and remarkable to watch. As an artist it is easy to appreciate the ridiculous ensembles put together for each edition of Vogue or other high-end fashion magazines for that matter.

I just recently had my subscription to Vogue run out and am thinking about renewing it after watching this film. Vogue is an inspiration to me as an artist in so many ways. The film's display of artistic quality that is put into each photo shoot and time consuming layout session reiterates an artist's plight in editing their own work and dealing with other's harsh criticisms.

As Toby said earlier, "They always say that art mimics fashion and fashion mimics art." This documentary proves that art and fashion share many more commonalities.
